Cultural specific services and appropriate service delivery is vital in regards to treatment options for Aboriginal people and communities. This can include integrated practices, traditions and activities that are based within Aboriginal cultural values, spirituality and beliefs.

Aboriginal ways of working can be very different to mainstream ways of working, particularly in regards to building trust, rapport and building and maintaining relationships in general. This may include the involvement or support of families and communities of people who are misusing substances.

Aboriginal people must have ownership over the ways drug and alcohol issues are addressed within their communities. Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS's) or Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS's) are based on a holistic model to address the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people.

Yarning about Alcohol Use in Pregnancy Toolkit

​​​​This toolkit identifies resources that support health workers to have conversations around pregnancy and alcohol with Aboriginal women in a culturally safe way. 

The toolkit also identifies mainstream pregnancy and alcohol resources and training. As well as links to further information on the assessment and diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).​

Yarning about alcohol and pregnancy

​This booklet for Aboriginal women provides information about the risks of drinking alcohol during pregnancy and strategies to support women to not drink. 

The booklet also promotes the availability of professional services to support women in not drinking alcohol during pregnancy and the role family and friends play in supporting a pregnant woman.

The booklet can be filled out in conjunction with a health professional to discuss:

  • health risks to you and your baby
  • no amount of alcohol is safe when pregnant
  • if alcohol is a worry
  • reasons to change
  • tips for change.

Health workers guide to yarning about alcohol and pregnancy

​This guide provides information about alcohol and pregnancy to health professionals working with Aboriginal women.

The guide was developed to support health care practitioners, educators, drug and alcohol workers and Aboriginal Health Practitioners to assess and provide interventions for alcohol use with clients.

The companion resource, Yarning about alcohol and pregnancy, is a booklet that can be filled out in conjunction with a client to discuss:
