Cancer Institute NSW evidence brief: Alcohol and Cancer

5/10/2021 - Research Paper

The Cancer Institute NSW has published a paper that summarised available evidence and their approach to alcohol and cancer prevention.

The research shows there is now strong evidence that alcohol consumption is linked to several cancers, including cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, breast, stomach, liver, and bowel.

Globally, 4% (741,300) of all new cases of cancer in 2020 were associated with alcohol consumption, with men accounting for 77% (568,700 cases) of these and women 23%.
